Colonel Penjor Ongdi

Founder – Colonel Penjor Ongdi

Founded in 1973 by Colonel Penjor Ongdi, International Trekkers emerged at a time when adventure tourism in Nepal was still in its early days. With remarkable foresight and determination, Colonel Ongdi introduced pioneering experiences such as hang gliding, hot air ballooning, and the development of mountain lodges— innovations that would help shape the nation’s tourism landscape.

He was instrumental in establishing many of the now-renowned trekking routes throughout the Khumbu region, creating opportunities for travelers to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas without necessarily summiting their towering peaks. His vision extended beyond tourism; he was deeply committed to fostering sustainable opportunities for local communities.

In 2002, he further realized this vision by constructing four mountain lodges in the Khumbu region, now known as Everest Summit Lodges. These lodges set new standards for comfort and hospitality in high-altitude environments and are still operating today.

Colonel Ongdi’s dedication in the 1970s laid the groundwork for Nepal’s emergence as one of the world’s most treasured destinations for trekking and mountaineering. A true pioneer of adventure tourism, he chose a life away from the spotlight, devoting himself instead to his enterprise, his community, and his family.

Managing Director – Phintso Ongdi

For over three decades, Phintso Ongdi has led International Trekkers with steady resilience. Taking up his father’s mantle, he led the company through some of Nepal’s most challenging years, including the Nepalese Civil War (1996–2006) and the political transition that followed the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.

His perseverance ensured continuity not only for the company, but also for the many guides, porters, and communities whose livelihoods depend upon it. Phintso’s leadership and professionalism are the heart of the company, sustaining the legacy of International Trekkers with stength and integrity.
